KILROY WAS HERE

Before the internet had memes, soldiers had a piece of chalk. The nose over the wall travelled further than any of them, and it never asked permission. Now it shows up on Robinhood.

Undefeated since 1939

No budget, no team, no campaign. He shipped out on troopships and never stopped moving: chalked across Europe, sprayed on the Berlin Wall, cut into the granite of the National WWII Memorial in Washington. Eighty years of distribution nobody paid for, and every line on this page is documented.

78 BC

Two thousand years of product market fit

The oldest dated graffiti at Pompeii reads "Gaius Pumidius Diphilus was here", scratched into a wall on 3 October 78 BC. A Varangian guard called Halfdan cut his name into a marble parapet inside the Hagia Sophia sometime between the ninth and eleventh centuries. Writing your name on someone else's wall is not a meme anyone invented. Kilroy is just the version that got the furthest.

1902–1962

A shipyard inspector named James J. Kilroy

He inspected riveted hulls at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. Riveters were paid by the rivet, and some of them rubbed out the chalk tally so the next shift would count their work twice. Kilroy started marking his inspections in wax crayon instead, and signed them.

The war

Interior paint was not a priority

Ships were launched faster than they could be finished, so nobody painted over the marks. Thousands of servicemen boarded troopships out of Quincy, found a stranger's name already inside the hull, and started writing it everywhere they landed.

1945

The Potsdam bathroom story

The most repeated Kilroy story says Stalin found "Kilroy was here" in the VIP bathroom at the Potsdam Conference and asked his aides who Kilroy was. It has never been confirmed. It is a rumour, and it has outlived most confirmed facts from that summer.

1946

Forty men said it was them

The American Transit Association ran a contest to find the real Kilroy. More than forty people claimed it. James Kilroy won after shipyard officials and his own riveters backed up his account.

$KILROY / HII

The pair quotes against Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest military shipbuilder in the United States. Kilroy came out of a shipyard, so the ticker comes out of one too.
